Thaddeus Alexander Dryden was born on May 21, 1881, at the Lock Hospital in Kingston, to Eliza Ann and Charles Todd Dryden; Mr Dryden was a dispenser, or in the vocabulary of the time, a druggist. It was a developing pattern in the island for fathers who dispensed medicine to produce sons who went on to qualify as medics.

Very sadly Eliza Dryden died during the same summer as her son achieved qualification as a doctor from McGill University in Canada.
