James Howard Blackwood was born in Clarendon in 1881; his father was a stone mason.
I have not yet found any information about James Blackwood's education, but his presence at gatherings of Mico graduates indicates that he studied at the Mico, presumably in the late 1890s.
In 1907 he married Alice Emptie, also a teacher:
- they had seven sons and two daughters.
