the family of Henry Brown Phillips
Henry Brown Phillips was a country school teacher, in Jamaica, in the second half of the 19th century; so far I do not know much more about him - who his parents were, where he trained as a teacher - but in a sense I know enough to recognise the value of his life in the story of Jamaica. As J. J. Mills, himself a distinguished teacher, wrote 'Oh, those God-sent teachers of rural Jamaica!'.
In 1870 Phillips was the teacher at Drapers, a little eastwards from Port Antonio, but by 1874 he was at Rock Hall, inland between Hope Bay and St. Margaret's Bay, west of Port Antonio. I don't know how long he was there, but his sons were taught in the school, and he was still remembered with gratitude over six decades later.
