The earliest references I have so far been able to find to cannabis in Jamaica were in advertisements for a remedy for asthma. In the second half of the nineteenth century, and on into the 20th century, cannabis was included in a wide variety of remedies which were available by prescription or over the counter. The company of Grimault and Sons, of Paris, France, marketed cannabis cigars and cigarettes as such a remedy for asthma.

Grimault's cannabis cigars and cigarettes for the relief of asthma were sold in Jamaica, by Edward Kinkead, from 1877 well on into the early decades of the 20th century:
