John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell was born in 1845,and was known as Marquess of Lorne until he succeeded to the title of Duke of Argyll in 1900, on his father's death. He attended the Universities of St. Andrew's and Cambridge. He was Liberal M.P. for Argyllshire from 1868 to 1878. In 1871 he married Princess Louise, 4th daughter of Queen Victoria.
From 1878 to 1883 he was Governor of Canada, during part of which time the Canadian Prime Minister was Sir John A. Macdonald, who was married to Susan Agnes Bernard, of Spanish Town, Jamaica.
After his return to England he was Governor and Constable of Windsor Castle, and from 1895 to 1900 M.P. for Manchester South. He and Princess Louise lived at Kensington Palace, where he died of pneumonia in 1914.
